Because MY PLUMBAGO PLANT IS GONE.
GONE.
As in, NOT THERE ANYMORE.
THE ENTIRE THING.
I kept that plant alive all summer when everything else had died, and I kept staving it back up when Balto seemed to think it was fun to dig around the roots — remulched, put down heavier rocks around the base, etc. And the past night or so I’ve been hearing the strangest sounds but it’s been, y’know, DARK, so I couldn’t see… and just now I was walking past the back door and saw Sachi was laying… where the plant should be.
Doubletake.
I look. Yes. NO PLANT.
No sign of plant anywhere, either. It’s GONE.
I mean, Odetta used to dig, and so did Saimhain, when they had the chance, but neither ever really bothered plants — they preferred to dig in the nice, cool, shade. THEY DID NOT STEAL AND DESTROY ENTIRE PLANTS.
That’s it, I’m SHOOTING the damn DOG.
GRRRRRRRRRR.

A few years ago my foster dog Clancy ate four fruit trees down to stumps, and killed my asparagus by eating it down to nubs as it came up. I gave up on the asparagus.
I wound up making wire cages for the fruit trees, which did come back from the stumps (above the grafts).
